Over the past few weeks the Heads of the Valleys Hotshots have been involved in a number of matches across the various age groups, with mixed results.

The Hotshots were without Net minder Greg Apperly for this match, so Craig McGuire stepped between the pipes, and played outstandingly considering his lack of experience.

 

The first half ended with the Caerphilly outfit leading 5-1, with the only Hotshots goal coming from star forward Matthew downward.

 

The valleys side conceded a further 5 goals during the 2nd period, but Downward hit a superb hat trick to bring his tally for the game to 4.

This was a brilliant win for the Under 10’s, with teamwork paying off.

 

Matthew Downward got the scoring under way with a great solo effort, and then he doubled the tally when a great passing move paid off.

 

The Cardiff side pulled a goal back, but Captain Jamie Lewis kept the Hotshots a comfortable 2 goals in front when he hit the 3rd.

 

The final goal of the half came from Downward whose hat trick strike gave the Blaenau Gwent outfit a 4-1 interval lead.

 

The second half saw the Hotshots continue to dominate, with defenders Jamie Robinson, Samantha Rodgers and the hardworking Michael Grovell all contributing to this victory.

 

Kaine Lewis and Joel Gillard both had a good game, and of course, McGuire in goal kept the opposition at bay.

 

Jordan Meale hit the 5th Hotshots goal, with Downward assisting Lewis for the 6th.

 

The 7th fell to Lewis, with the Howardians getting a late consolation right at the end.

Jamie Lewis hit the only Hotshots goal of the first half, with Jordan Meale netting the Valleys sides second right at the beginning of the 2nd period.

This was a much closer encounter, although the game ended with a red card for a Caerphilly and Hotshots player.

 

The Hotshots totally dominated the first half, with Downward netting 2 and Lewis netting the 3rd goal.

 

Caerphilly hit a goal at the start of the 2nd period, with Meale scoring off a Downward assist to give the Hotshots a 4-1 lead.

 

At this point the Caerphilly side stepped up a gear, and the Hotshots stopped playing, allowing Caerphilly to not only draw level, but hit the winning goal.

The 2nd half of this game was what finished the Hotshots, but the first half was a very close affair.

 

The Caerphilly side went 2 goals to the good before the combined skating and scoring abilities of Jamie Lewis and Matthew Downward put the Hotshots back in with a shou

 

Lewis hit the first goal off a Samantha Rodgers assist, and then Downward hit the equaliser.

 

Caerphilly netted a further twice, but again Lewis scored to bring the half time scores to 4-3.

 

Downward scored the equaliser and then a flurry of goals from the Caerphilly side saw them take a 9-4 lead before Downward again struck, this time off a Mike Grovell assist.

Downward hit his 4th goal late in the game, this time with Joel Gillard assisting, for his first point of the season (a player is awarded a point for a goal, and for an assist, and these are added together for a final points tally at the end of the season).

The Hotshots youngsters were very tired after the Caerphilly game, and this showed as the Cardiff outfit ran riot.

The only Hotshots goal came at the start of the 2nd period, when Alex Trotman netted off a Sarah Rodgers assist.

Trotman netted the first goal off a Rodgers assist, with Rachel Grovell scoring number 2.

An own goal by Grovell let the Caerphilly side back into the game, and despite Trotman netting for goal number 3, the half time scores were tied, as the Valleys side’s defence went walkabout.

 

The start of the 2nd half saw the Hotshots go 5-3 up, with Trotman and Grovell getting a goal each, but again some poor defending resulted in the Caerphilly outfit drawing level.

 

Trotman netted his 4th and the Hotshots 6th, but sloppy play saw the opposition again draw level.

The Hotshots went 2-0 up, with Sarah Rodgers hitting both goals, but slack play allowed the league leaders to draw level, and then hit their 3rd to take the sores at the break to 3-2.

 

Luciano Casa hit the equaliser at the start of the 2nd half, but 2 goals from the Capitals could only be matched by 1 from the Hotshots, with Trotman netting the 4th.

This was a closely fought and physical game, with the Hotshots having to work hard for their victory.

 

The Blaenau Gwent side went into the break with a 4-3 lead, after goals from Greg Symonds, Gareth Liddington and a brace from Captain Michael Haile.

 

GB player Nick Rogers netted number 5 at the start of the 2nd half from a Liddington assist,  with Rogers  scoring the 6th off a Jason Rickwood assist.

 

The 6th goal fell to Haile from a Rickwood set up.
